I'm a Ghost in My Own House
On October 2012, ArtSociates and Lawangwangi presented a solo exhibition by Melati Suryodarmo with Hendro Wiyanto as its curator. The exhibition, that concluded the sequence of Lawangwangi’s programs in 2012, highlighted Melati’s strong fascination on death, of which she paraphrased according to her own nature and personality. Melati’s works in I Am a Ghost in My Own House referred to her review on Robert Wilson’s show, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, in Amsterdam on 23rd of June, 2012. It was clear on her appraisal, how she greatly admired and highly respected Abramovic as her teacher and as a fellow artist. In similar manner to Abramovic, who seemingly staged her own death, Melati also interpreted death as a perpetual recurrence, a presence in everyday, mundane life that molds her and her identity. Through such notion, Melati retraced her steps from her past, of which she considered as phases of death of herself.
