But Muchtar

But Muchtar was born in Bandung on December 30, 1930 under the name Broertje Muchtar Soebandi. He was born in the middle of a large family from Banten and is the seventh of eleven children. He is an artist who also works as a lecturer at universities, chancellor, member of the MPR, and chairman of community organizations. But is one of the first batches of fine arts graduates from ITB who had received his education in the United States. In 1963, He returned to his homeland to begin the preparatory stage for the Department of Sculpture opening at ITB together with Rita Widagdo and G. Sidharta. After opening the Sculpture Studio at ITB in 1964, But made a career as a teacher and held several important positions at ITB. He has served as Chair of the Department of Communication and Culture of the ITB Rector for two periods, 1977-1980 and 1980-1984, and held Rector's position of ISI Yogyakarta for two periods, namely 1984-1988 and 1988-1992. But is known as a skilled sculptor and painter, where But's paintings under Ries Mulder's guidance show what many art critics have categorized as "Mazhab Bandung."
